So all good news then...
So there is no excuse not to secure your site then? As with anything, there are always considerations to be aware of. Of the sites we have migrated to use SSL, it hasn't been possible to definitively identify a huge boost in search engine ranking, since content and external factors play a far larger part in determining the results, but all the evidence suggests there is a benefit. There is a cost associated with SSL over and above the normal maintenance costs. Certificates have to be created, validated and maintained regularly.
Additionally, in the last two years, a number of significant failings in the encryption mechanisms have come to light such as POODLE, resulting in a need to reconfigure servers, generate new certificates and make some hard choices about the browsers your site supports to balance security and accessibility. All of this is complex and changing such that of the top 10,000 domains, 90% did not have a perfectly secure set-up.
Whilst there have been concerns about the overheads associated with encryption in the past these are no longer a significant reason to avoid SSL use. However, our own experience, as well as that of many other large organisations is that it is easy to underestimate the work involved in moving to a fully encrypted site and getting it right. The experience gained from doing this a number of times before though does help with this though.
Lastly, and returning to the SEO situation again, Google was encouraging organisations to use encryption, but then penalising them for redirecting users to the secure version of the site when visitors requested the in-secure version. Thankfully it seems that on the basis of recent announcements from Google, they no longer apply a penalty to page rankings when redirecting users to the secure site.
Whilst it is not without its challenges it would seem that now is a good a time as any to take advantage of the multiple benefits of website encryption. It's important to understand the work and costs involved and so here at NetXtra we have put together a simple "SSL security readiness report" package to help you make the right decision.
